The roots of Saratoga Steakhouse come from the purchase of a blues & college bar near the campus of Wake Forest University. The restaurant was named Putters Patio & Grill and it had a great sub and sandwich menu. At the time, the restaurant catered to a predominately business crowd during lunch hours. Dennis Shea purchased Putters in September 1999 with the intention to serve the area's finest steaks. The business started slowly, but after a positive review in the Winston-Salem Journal in July 2001, the restaurant earned the reputation for offering the "Triad's finest steaks." In November 2001, he purchased a restaurant in Clemmons. The restaurant was renamed Putters and it was busy from day one. For awhile, the Shea family operated two restaurants; however, the original Putters was sold shortly thereafter. Both restaurants remained Putters but were under different ownership. Since the original Putters, Mr. Shea dreamed about operating a restaurant with the atmosphere to complement the food served. At different points there were plans to purchase another restaurant or expand the existing location but eventually it was decided that a new restaurant would be constructed. This restaurant will still offer the area's best steaks but it will do so in a unique atmosphere. For that reason, it was necessary to call the restaurant Saratoga Steakhouse.
